Introduction
Have you ever faced a difficult decision and wished you knew exactly what God wanted you to do? Maybe you've prayed for direction about your family, finances, health, or future.
Life is full of decisions. Some are small, like what to do with our day, while others are life-changing—marriage, careers, friendships, finances, ministry opportunities, and difficult seasons of suffering. We often ask:
How do I know God's will?
How can I make wise decisions?
How do I recognize God's direction?
How can I discern truth from deception?
The answer begins in 1 Kings 3. In 1 Kings 3, we meet a young king named Solomon who was overwhelmed by the responsibility before him. His request pleased God and became one of the most beautiful examples of seeking wisdom in all of Scripture.
This chapter teaches us one of the greatest lessons in Scripture: God delights in giving wisdom to those who humbly ask for it.
👑 Background of 1 Kings 3
King David has died, and his son Solomon is now king over Israel.
Solomon is likely still a young man, perhaps in his late teens or early twenties. He has inherited the throne of his father, but with it comes an enormous responsibility.
Imagine being responsible for an entire nation.
Thousands of people depend on your leadership.
You must make decisions that affect countless lives.
You must protect, guide, and judge the people fairly.
Solomon understands something many leaders forget:
He doesn't have enough wisdom on his own.
That realization becomes the beginning of true wisdom. 1 John 4 – testing the spirits to know what is from God vs. deception

"Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father."
This verse is beautiful because it tells us something about Solomon's heart.
Before he became known for his wisdom…
Before his wealth…

He loved the Lord.
Discernment begins with a relationship with God.
Many people want God's direction without wanting God's presence.
But wisdom flows from knowing Him.

"At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, 'Ask for whatever you want Me to give you.'"
This is one of the most astonishing invitations in Scripture.
God gives Solomon an open invitation:

"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God."
God wants His children to come to Him.
Too often we worry, strive, and carry burdens ourselves when God is saying:

Solomon says:
"I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties."
Notice his humility.
He doesn't pretend to know everything.
He doesn't act self-sufficient.
He admits his need.
The world says:
"Believe in yourself."
God says:
"Depend on Me."
Humility opens the door for wisdom.

"Your servant is here among the people You have chosen."
Solomon remembers something important:
These are God's people, not his.
Everything we have belongs to God:
Our families
Our ministries
Our businesses
Our homes
Our gifts
We are stewards, not owners.

Solomon does not ask for:

What Is Discernment?
Biblical discernment is:
Understanding God's truth.
Recognizing right from wrong.

Discernment helps us stay anchored in God's truth.
🌟 God's Response (1 Kings 3:10-14)
"The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this."
Imagine that.
God was pleased.
Why?
Because Solomon's request showed:

❤️ Dependence upon God
❤️ A servant's heart
❤️ A desire to lead well
God then gives Solomon:
✅ Wisdom
✅ Riches
✅ Honor
This doesn't mean following God always leads to wealth.
Rather, it shows that God often blesses those who seek Him first.

"Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
God cares more about our character than our comfort.
⚖️ Solomon's Wisdom Is Tested (1 Kings 3:16-28)
Immediately after receiving wisdom, Solomon faces a difficult case.
Two women come before him.
Both claim to be the mother of the same baby.
There are:
No witnesses
No evidence
No proof
Human wisdom cannot solve this problem.
Then Solomon says:
"Cut the living child in two."
The real mother immediately cries out:
"Give her the baby! Just don't kill him!"
The other woman agrees to divide the child.
Solomon instantly knows who the true mother is.
Lessons from This Story

The true mother would rather lose her child than see him harmed.
👀 Discernment sees beneath the surface.
Things are not always what they appear to be.

There are moments when we don't know what to do.

How to Develop Discernment Today

God often leads through peace, conviction, and Scripture.
5. Obey What God Already Revealed
More wisdom comes through obedience.
