The dangers of drunkenness, the deceptive nature of addiction, and the freedom available through God's wisdom.
πKey Passage
Proverbs 23:29-35
✨ Key Verse
"Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. In the end it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder."
— Proverbs 23:31-32 (ESV)
πΏ Introduction
Alcohol has affected countless lives and families throughout history. While the Bible does not condemn every use of wine, it repeatedly warns against drunkenness, addiction, and allowing anything other than God to control our hearts and minds.
Many people turn to alcohol hoping to escape stress, loneliness, guilt, anxiety, grief, or pain. What begins as relief can slowly become bondage. The promises of pleasure and comfort often lead instead to broken relationships, regret, and spiritual emptiness.
❤️ God understands our struggles.
π He knows our weaknesses.
π Proverbs 23 provides a vivid picture of the destructive power of alcohol while also pointing us toward wisdom and freedom.
This chapter is not meant to shame people who struggle. Instead, it serves as a loving warning from a Father who desires abundant life for His children.
π Background of Proverbs
Proverbs was written primarily by Solomon, whom God blessed with extraordinary wisdom.
Its purpose is:
✅ To teach wisdom.
✅ To help people make godly decisions.
✅ To avoid destructive paths.
✅ To live in the fear of the Lord.
Throughout Proverbs, Solomon repeatedly contrasts:
⚖️ Wisdom versus foolishness
π€ Righteousness versus wickedness
π± Life versus destruction
In Proverbs 23:29-35, Solomon gives one of the Bible's clearest descriptions of alcohol abuse.
π· Read Proverbs 23:29-35
π Who Has Woe?
"Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?"
— Proverbs 23:29
Solomon begins with six questions.
Who has:
π Pain?
π’ Sorrow?
π Arguments?
π Confusion?
π©Ή Injuries without cause?
π️ Bloodshot eyes?
Then he answers:
"They that tarry long at the wine…"
— Proverbs 23:30
π Observation
Alcohol promises comfort but often delivers suffering.
Many people drink to forget problems, but those problems usually remain—and new problems are often added. Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to be - Proverbs
❤️ Application
Ask yourself:
- What am I turning to for comfort?
- Am I seeking peace from God or from something temporary?
- Are there habits in my life producing sorrow instead of healing?
π The Deception of Sin
"Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup…"
— Proverbs 23:31
Wine sparkles.
✨ It appears harmless.
✨ It seems attractive.
Solomon says not even to gaze upon it with longing.
Why?
Because temptation often starts long before the action itself.
Sin begins with desire.
James writes:
"Every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed."
— James 1:14
Eve first looked at the forbidden fruit.
David first looked at Bathsheba.
Sin rarely starts suddenly.
⚠️ It begins quietly.
❤️ Application
Ask:
- What am I allowing my mind to dwell on?
- Am I entertaining temptations instead of resisting them?
- What boundaries should I establish?
π Sin Always Lies
"At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder."
— Proverbs 23:32
Alcohol says:
π· "This will help."
π "This will relax you."
π "You deserve this."
π€ "Just one more."
But eventually, what seemed harmless bites like a poisonous snake.
Addiction is deceptive because people often believe they are in control when, in reality, they are being controlled.
Paul writes:
"All things are lawful unto me, but I will not be brought under the power of any."
— 1 Corinthians 6:12
π Anything that masters us becomes a form of bondage.
π️ God desires freedom, not slavery.
π§ Altered Thinking
"Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things."
— Proverbs 23:33
Alcohol affects judgment.
π£️ People say things they regret.
π Relationships suffer.
π Families experience pain.
π Trust is broken.
Peter warns:
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."
— 1 Peter 5:8
π‘️ God calls believers to spiritual alertness. 52 Weeks of Proverbs
π The Illusion of Stability
"Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea…"
— Proverbs 23:34
Imagine trying to sleep on a ship tossed by waves.
Nothing is steady.
Nothing is secure.
That picture describes life apart from God's peace.
People often seek stability in:
π° Money
❤️ Relationships
π· Alcohol
π Entertainment
But these things cannot provide lasting peace.
Jesus said:
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you…"
— John 14:27
✨ True peace comes from Christ.
π The Cycle of Addiction
Perhaps the saddest verse in this passage is verse 35.
"They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick… when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again."
This is the cycle of addiction:
π’ Pain
π Regret
π€ Promises to stop
π Returning again
Many people trapped in addiction feel hopeless.
But the gospel tells us something different.
✨ There is hope!
❤️ There is grace!
π There is forgiveness!
π️ There is freedom!
No chain is too strong for Christ.
✝️ Jesus Came to Set Captives Free
Jesus declared:
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me… to preach deliverance to the captives."
— Luke 4:18
Sin enslaves.
✝️ Jesus liberates.
The cross is not only about forgiveness.
It is about transformation.
Paul writes:
"If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature."
— 2 Corinthians 5:17
❤️ No one is beyond redemption.
Not the alcoholic.
Not the addict.
Not the person who has failed repeatedly.
God's grace is greater!
π Replacing Empty Wells
Many addictions begin because people are thirsty inside.
They long for:
❤️ Love
π Peace
π€ Acceptance
πΏ Rest
π️ Relief
But only Christ satisfies the soul.
Jesus said:
"Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst."
— John 4:14
π· Alcohol may numb pain temporarily.
π Jesus heals deeply.
π ️ Practical Steps Toward Freedom
1️⃣ Admit the Problem
"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy."
— Proverbs 28:13
Freedom begins with honesty.
2️⃣ Bring Your Struggle to God
π Tell Him:
- Your fears.
- Your failures.
- Your weakness.
God is near to the brokenhearted.
3️⃣ Remove Temptation
Romans 13:14 says:
"Make not provision for the flesh."
⚔️ Avoiding temptation isn't weakness.
It's wisdom.
4️⃣ Seek Godly Support
"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another."
— James 5:16
π€ Healing often happens through accountability and encouragement.
5️⃣ Fill Your Mind With God's Word
"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."
— Psalm 119:11
π God's truth drives out the lies.

- What practical step is God calling you to take today?
π Prayer
Father,
Thank You for loving us enough to warn us. Thank You that no addiction, no failure, and no sin is greater than Your grace.
Help us seek satisfaction in You instead of temporary escapes. Give strength to those struggling with alcohol and restore broken lives and families. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and lead us in the path of wisdom.
Thank You that whom the Son sets free is free indeed.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
