Study on 2 Book of Chronicles
Overview of 2 Chronicles 16
2 Chronicles 16 focuses on the later years of King Asa’s reign over Judah. Although Asa began as a faithful king who trusted God, this chapter shows how fear, pride, and self-reliance slowly weakened his spiritual walk.
The chapter teaches powerful lessons about:
- trusting God completely
- avoiding compromise
- responding to correction
- finishing faithfully
Background
Asa was one of Judah’s better kings. Earlier in his reign, he:
- removed idols
- led spiritual reform
- trusted God during battles
- encouraged the people to seek the Lord
But in chapter 16, Asa faced a new challenge and handled it differently.
Verses 1–6 — Asa Relies on Human Help Instead of God
King Baasha of Israel began building defenses against Judah. Instead of seeking God, Asa made an alliance with Ben-Hadad, king of Syria.
Asa took silver and gold from the temple treasury and sent it to Syria for protection.
Main Lesson
Asa trusted:
- political strategy
- money
- military alliances
instead of trusting God.
Spiritual Insight
Sometimes people trust:
- finances
- relationships
- influence
- personal plans
more than God during difficult situations.

Verses 7–10 — Hanani Rebukes Asa
God sent Hanani the seer to confront Asa.
Hanani reminded Asa that God had previously delivered him from much larger enemies when he trusted fully in the Lord.
Famous Verse
“For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.” — 2 Chronicles 16:9
This verse reveals:
- God searches for faithful hearts
- God strengthens those who trust Him
- God desires dependence, not pride
Asa’s Response to Correction
Instead of repenting, Asa became angry.
He imprisoned Hanani and oppressed some of the people.
Important Lesson
A hardened heart often:
- resists correction
- becomes defensive
- shifts blame
- grows prideful
Godly humility accepts correction and turns back to God.
Verses 11–14 — Asa’s Illness and Death
Later, Asa developed a severe disease in his feet.
Yet Scripture says:
“Even in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but the physicians.”
This does not mean seeking medical help is wrong. The issue was that Asa continued relying on human solutions while refusing to seek God.
Main Themes in 2 Chronicles 16
Trusting God Fully
God wanted Asa’s dependence, not partial trust.
Application
God cares about:
- where our confidence is placed
- whether we seek Him first
- the condition of our hearts
Pride Can Slowly Harden the Heart
Asa began well but drifted spiritually over time.
Warning Signs
- resisting correction
- relying only on self
- spiritual complacency
- anger when confronted
Finishing Well Matters
A strong beginning does not guarantee a faithful ending.
God desires consistency throughout our lives.
